Deepwater hosts I-Rod night golf tournament

On Friday, October 12, Deepwater hosted the First Annual I-Rod “Night Clubbing” “Glow-Ball Warming” nighttime golf tournament at Houston’s Bear Creek Golf World’s President’s Course. For those unaware of night golfing, you simply invite a bunch of your pals (in this case, our intrepid I-Rod clients, suppliers and friends), take a few hundred glow-sticks, some glow-in-the-dark golf balls, a couple dozen golf carts and a whole bunch of beer, and turn them loose on a darkened golf course. Carts and golfers are festooned with glow sticks and glow rings so they can be (sort of) seen while zipping around the inky blackness, and the tees and holes are likewise marked. Even the paved trails get red markers warning cart drivers of hidden dangers just off the roadway, such as drainage ditches and giant ponds. Fairway shots resembled low-flying roman candles, except the little red orbs usually didn’t explode before they hit the green. Which is good, since each team gets only eight balls.

In the waning sunlight before the tournament, participants were feted with a meal and drinks, a bit of warm-up time on the driving range and a putting contest with an i-Pad handed to the winner, Paul Schofield of FarWest Corrosion Services. Pete Migura of DCP Midstream was the winner of a free round of golf.

Hole-side refreshments were provided by two carts - one with a keg, the other with the hard stuff - that zipped about the course all evening.

Hole sponsors for this year’s tournament included Acadiana Coatings and Supply, FarWest Corrosion Control, Intergraph engineering software, NACE International and Sunbelt Stud Welding.

The participants’ comments about this unconventional golf event have been enthusiastically positive. It seems that some folks thought it sounded like a crazy idea. Now they think they’d be crazy to miss it.

Thanks also to the Bear Creek staff and everyone who helped make this event a success. We look forward to (almost) seeing all of you at the second annual I-Rod night tournament next year. This means you have about a year to acquire some glow-in-the-dark golf clubs.
