The SmartMat has replaced the CP Mat as Deepwater's concrete mattress cathodic protection system.
The SmartMat combines the standard concrete stabilization mattress with an integral cathodic protection system comprising many small aluminum anodes to provide CP for pipelines in tough conditions. The mattress itself relies on the plastic Sea-Mat shells, which have revolutionized the deployment of offshore concrete mattresses. Rather than shipping a pre-poured concrete mattress, we can now ship a complete mat's worth of sea-struct shells and anodes to the site. These shells conveniently clip together and allow local crews to pour the concrete on-site.
Placement of a SmartMat will provide the required stabilization and the added benefit of up to 30 years of cathodic protection for up to 3 miles of pipeline (1.5 miles in each direction). Tieback to the pipeline can be made with diver or ROV using the field proven RetroClamp™ system. Originally designed to provide cathodic protection at pipe crossings, SmartMats are provided with patented non-shielding soft pads on the underside and can be loaded with aluminum or zinc anodes, making them suitable for all water chemistry (from seawater to river water).
Abstract: This paper discusses the practicalities of installing replacement cathodic protection to ageing offshore pipelines using diver assisted and diver-less systems.
Abstract: Newly developed survey methods combined with innovative design software and low cost, easy-to-install hardware are helping to redefine cathodic protection & life extensions for offshore pipelines.
Abstract: Pipe coatings with galvanic anode bracelets has worked equally as well in deep water as it has in shallow. There are however some very important differences in the way corrosion control ...

The Mat's weight and stability make it ideal for replacing the anodes on aging pipelines in harsh environments.
The electrical connection between the anodes and the asset receiving the cathodic protection is made using the RetroClamp system, which can be installed via ROV or Diver, and which does not require a pipeline's concrete weight coating to be removed.
Deepwater uses anodes from our two foundry locations (Deepwater Gaus - Houston, TX and Deepwater MPE - Kuala Lumpur), allowing us to strictly regulate QA/QC for all the aluminum and zinc anodes we use.
